What sense to make of the stream of images that are constantly shared on the internet and social media? This hands-on workshop will provide participants with basic techniques to identify the source and geolocation of images posted on the Internet without any element of context. These techniques, which are presented under the term OSINT, an acronym for Open-Source INTelligence, allow the use of publicly available data and tools to further the understanding of an event or situation, and are regularly a tool for journalists and researchers who use them to disprove fake news and restore counter-narratives.

The workshop will also allow an introduction to camera-mapping, a technique that consists in recreating a 3D replica using a provided image. Using free and open source tools such as fSpy and Blender, participants will deepen their knowledge by modeling a basic 3D model and calculating the time of day of an image using shadow matching. To finish, participants will learn how to export an animation that can later be shared.

The workshop is promoted by Novembre Numeriques and Mais França - a programme organized by Institut Français and Ambassad de France au Portugal.

A Paris-based artist and filmmaker, Nicolas Gourault's (b. 1991) work wanders between visual art and visual culture, linking these dimensions to political concerns through the documentary and critical use of new media. Through the tools of image production, Gourault explores the forms of otherness that persist within controlled spaces. His works have been exhibited in venues such as the Centre Pompidou, ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medien or Ars Electronica, but also in film festivals such as Cinéma du Réel, Festival dei Popoli, IndieLisboa and Curtas Vila do Conde.
