EMAP seeks artists to support through artist residency programme

Formed by leading institutions from fifteen European countries, the European Media Art Platform (EMAP) is one of Europe’s most significant networks dedicated to supporting the creation and dissemination of media art, digital art, robotic art, and bio art. Following a one-year hiatus, EMAP returns in 2026 with an ambitious four-year programme, reaffirming its commitment to fostering artistic innovation, international collaboration, and cultural exchange at the intersection of art, technology, and science across Europe.

At the core of the European Media Art Platform is a residency programme designed to stimulate artistic creation and exchange across Europe. Applications for the 2026 open call are now open at call.emare.eu.

Artists and collectives who are citizens or taxpayers of a European Union Member State, as well as applicants from a selected list of eligible non-EU countries, are invited to apply until 13 March. Emerging artists are strongly encouraged to apply, regardless of age or academic background.

Applicants are required to submit a proposal for an artistic project to be developed during a two-month residency taking place between April and December 2026 at one of the network’s fifteen member institutions. Host institutions provide accommodation, technical support, and dedicated workspace throughout the residency period.

Selected artists will receive a grant of €4,000, an additional €4,000 production budget, full coverage of travel expenses, and an invitation to participate in a conference and networking meeting taking place on 8–9 May in Braga.

In addition to supporting contemporary artistic practices at the intersection of art, technology, and science, the programme places strong emphasis on enhancing the international visibility of the works produced. In a first phase, the projects are presented at the host institutions. They are subsequently showcased in solo or group exhibitions across the fifteen member organisations of the platform. Selected works may also be presented internationally through EMAP’s global network of more than 150 partner institutions.

Beyond the residency programme, EMAP’s four-year initiative includes a series of training and capacity-building activities addressing key topics in digital culture and media art. These include copyright in the context of artificial intelligence, cultural mediation and audience development, and sustainable production practices in media art. The project remains subject to final approval of funding under the Creative Europe programme.

Currently, EMAP comprises the following institutions: Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria), CIKE (Košice, Slovakia), Chroniques (Marseille, France), gnration (Braga, Portugal), iMAL (Brussels, Belgium), IMPAKT (Utrecht, Netherlands), Kersnikova Institute / Kapelica Gallery (Ljubljana, Slovenia), KONTEJNER (Zagreb, Croatia), LABoral (Gijón, Spain), MEET Digital Culture Centre (Milan, Italy), NeMe (Limassol, Cyprus), Onassis Stegi (Athens, Greece), RIXC (Riga, Latvia), WRO Art Centre (Wrocław, Poland) and Werkleitz (Halle/Saale, Germany), in cooperation with Silent Green (Berlin, Germany).
